Within several months, all of the workers were dead. Official reports at the time listed the cause of death as cholera. For decades, the circumstances of their deaths have drawn the curiosity of the Irish American community, which suspected foul play. They are at the site where they found bodies of the rail workers who were victims of cholera and violence in Malvern. In , twin brothers William and Frank Watson discovered documents kept by their late grandfather, who had been the executive assistant to the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The file came with instructions that the information be kept private. The documents contradicted the story released during the cholera epidemic.

He married Maria Suarez when he was The couple had a daughter and two sons, but Alphonsus was a widower by the age 31 with only a three-year-old son still living. By the time he was 40, he suffered further loss with the death of his own mother and his son. These losses helped him recognize the Lord was calling him to a different vocation — religious life among the Jesuits, who had instructed him for a short time in his youth before his father died.

Because he lacked an education, the Jesuits initially turned Alphonsus away, twice. However, the Provincial finally accepted him, but as a lay brother rather than as a candidate for the priesthood because of his age and ill health.

New sunfish species discovered Scientists discovered “Hoodwinker,” a new species of sunfish that can weigh up to two tons The elusive new species, named the Hoodwinker Sunfish, was found by a team of experts from Australia’s Murdoch University. Nyegaard spent four years searching for the fish, which like other sunfish species, can weigh more than two tons and grow to more than 9.

The quest began after she noticed genetic differences in sunfish samples from the Australian and New Zealand longline fishery. The researcher collected data from 27 samples of the new species over a three-year period, sometimes travelling thousands of miles. Apparently preferring cold water, the new species has been found around New Zealand, along the south-east coast of Australia, off South Africa and Southern Chile. Like its two sister species, Mola mola and Mola ramsayi, Mola tecta also has the appearance of half a fish, although it lacks the lumps, bumps and protruding snout found on Mola mola and Mola ramsayi, according to Murdoch University.

Five Hundred Years of Injustice: The Legacy of Fifteenth Century Religious Prejudice by Steve Newcomb When Christopher Columbus first set foot on the white sands of Guanahani island, he performed a ceremony to “take possession” of the land for the king and queen of Spain, acting under the international laws of Western Christendom.

Although the story of Columbus’ “discovery” has taken on mythological proportions in most of the Western world, few people are aware that his act of “possession” was based on a religious doctrine now known in history as the Doctrine of Discovery. Even fewer people realize that today – five centuries later – the United States government still uses this archaic Judeo-Christian doctrine to deny the rights of Native American Indians.

Under various theological and legal doctrines formulated during and after the Crusades, non-Christians were considered enemies of the Catholic faith and, as such, less than human. Accordingly, in the bull of , Pope Nicholas directed King Alfonso to “capture, vanquish, and subdue the saracens, pagans, and other enemies of Christ,” to “put them into perpetual slavery,” and “to take all their possessions and property.

Thus, when Columbus sailed west across the Sea of Darkness in – with the express understanding that he was authorized to “take possession” of any lands he “discovered” that were “not under the dominion of any Christian rulers” – he and the Spanish sovereigns of Aragon and Castile were following an already well-established tradition of “discovery” and conquest.

In the Inter Cetera document, Pope Alexander stated his desire that the “discovered” people be “subjugated and brought to the faith itself. During this quincentennial of Columbus’ journey to the Americas, it is important to recognize that the grim acts of genocide and conquest committed by Columbus and his men against the peaceful Native people of the Caribbean were sanctioned by the abovementioned documents of the Catholic Church.

Indeed, these papal documents were frequently used by Christian European conquerors in the Americas to justify an incredibly brutal system of colonization – which dehumanized the indigenous people by regarding their territories as being “inhabited only by brute animals. Over the next several centuries, these beliefs gave rise to the Doctrine of Discovery used by Spain, Portugal, England, France, and Holland – all Christian nations.

Libby right , the physical chemist who conceived of radiocarbon dating, with graduate student Ernest Anderson. Willard Libby’s concept of radiocarbon dating Willard Libby — , a professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago, began the research that led him to radiocarbon dating in He was inspired by physicist Serge Korff — of New York University, who in discovered that neutrons were produced during the bombardment of the atmosphere by cosmic rays.

Korff predicted that the reaction between these neutrons and nitrogen , which predominates in the atmosphere, would produce carbon , also called radiocarbon.

Meanwhile, our galaxy has — billion stars , and there are even more galaxies in the universe. The numbers of the night sky are humbling. And they give us a deep perspective…on drugs. But for good reason.

The TCDT consisted of training for both the crew and the launch team that simulated the final hours up until launch. During the TCDT, the crew went through a number of exercises that included rescue training and a launch day simulation that included everything that would happen on launch day — except the launch. On 15 January , Timothy Kopra, scheduled as the lead spacewalker for the mission at the time, was injured in a bicycle accident near his Houston -area home, reportedly breaking his hip.

The replacement did not affect the targeted launch date.

May 07, 12, To create a new drug, researchers have to test tens of thousands of compounds to determine how they interact. There has to be a better way—and now it seems there is. Last week, researchers published a paper detailing an artificial intelligence system made to help discover new drugs, and significantly shorten the amount of time and money it takes to do so. The technology aims to streamline the initial phase of drug discovery, which involves analyzing how different molecules interact with one another—specifically, scientists need to determine which molecules will bind together and how strongly.

They use trial and error and process of elimination to analyze tens of thousands of compounds, both natural and synthetic. AtomNet takes the legwork out of this process, using deep learning to predict how molecules will behave and how likely they are to bind together. The software teaches itself about molecular interaction by identifying patterns, similar to how AI learns to recognize images. Remember the 3D models of atoms you made in high school, where you used pipe cleaners and foam balls to represent the connections between protons, neutrons and electrons?

AtomNet uses similar digital 3D models of molecules, incorporating data about their structure to predict their bioactivity. If you study enough historical examples of molecules…you can then make predictions that are extremely accurate yet also extremely fast. What it can do is predict how likely a compound is to work against a certain illness.

Paul Berry After building the product for Huffington Post, and owning the product and engineering groups at AOL after we were acquired, it was clear to me there was a huge gap between what the current CMS offering gave the world and what the world needed. Five years later we are at scale, moving the needle and doing to WordPress what Airbnb did to Craigslist. Social and Centralized WordPress, Drupal, and the custom CMS solutions of the world are all independent, non-connected instances that each need to be updated individually.

There are over 87 million instances of WordPress alone in the world, and each security upgrade, feature update, and every other single thing has to be updated for each site individually. By contrast, RebelMouse is a social, centralized platform built to keep up with the speed of the tech giants.

It goes a long way to help people who make such because they can use it to cater for other bills. Well, I can envision what dropped into your mind, A lot of people have done it and failed or they got duped and lost all they put in. Well, this is true and it is due to some reasons. Some people are greedy 2. Some did not learn and go through the right process and got their fingers burnt. Some went through the backdoor.

The resilience, self-efficacy, and personal agency outcomes of seventh grade students who received the Discovery Dating curriculum were investigated through pre- and posttest analysis and compared with the outcomes of an eighth grade comparison group that did not receive the Discovery Dating curriculum.

Alice Skenandore, founder and director of WWGP, created a healthy relationship curriculum, Discovery Dating as a method to engage youth and adults to explore and clarify their goals and values, discern character traits of others, and thereby develop criteria and skills for better decision-making. Theory and Reach Discovery Dating is built on the belief that people have their own best interests at heart, and if given complete information and access to choices, they will choose well.

Self-efficacy and self-regulation are the core elements of personal agency. Individuals with high levels of personal agency are more likely to understand the consequences of their actions, be more resilient to new challenges, be better able to constructively problem solve, and be less likely to pass on the hurt and pain of oppressive behaviors. Discovery Dating is currently being applied with youth and adults as a broad-spectrum intervention tool to develop decisional skills to reduce risk behaviors including teen pregnancy, violence, substance abuse and unhealthy relationships.

For over ten years, we have implemented Discovery Dating in classrooms, parent programs, prisons, youth clubs, mentor-mentee programs, and support groups. A recent program brought together mothers and children harmed by domestic violence, using Discovery Dating as a lens to explore these past harms and create future avenues for family healing.

Discovery of new fossil from half billion years ago sheds light on life on Earth

The discovery process Researchers used high-tech multispectral imaging, unavailable 50 years ago, which revealed previously unseen markings on the backside of the shard. The imaging process adds additional filters, specifically to scan pottery shards, or pieces of stone with inscriptions called ostraca, and uses algorithms to produce an optimal image.

After deciphering 50 characters on the back, researchers understood the previously hidden inscription was a continuation of the text on the front. The newly discovered text begins with a request for wine and a guarantee for assistance if the addressee has any of his own requests.

Thursday, December 7th, Categories: Three of the burials, one a young child, were determined to be of African descent, constituting the earliest known discovery of remains of enslaved people in Delaware. Future plans will be developed to exhibit the findings, possibly to include facial reconstructions based on the skeletal remains. The original owner was John Avery, who once served as a judge in nearby Lewes in the period just after the colony transitioned from Dutch to English rule.

The story is even more significant as its telling would not have been possible without the volunteer efforts of many members of the Archaeological Society of Delaware. Over the next few years, archeologists continued to work the site and branch out into neighboring parcels, uncovering artifacts and evidence of structures from the original plantation.

The first burials were discovered in With their consent, the state engaged Dr. Douglas Owsley of the Smithsonian Institution for his expertise in the field of physical anthropology and his well-known work with early colonial settlements at Jamestown, Va. Here we explore this idea — and its roots. They may be approached as relationships to enter rather than simply as methods. We focus on the thinking of four people in particular: David Bohm — the eminent physicist and friend of Krishnamurti , whose example and practical proposals for dialogue have met a response from a number of different areas — but particularly those, like Peter Senge , who are concerned with organizational development. Martin Buber has also made a significant contribution to the appreciation of encounter and dialogue in education.

Gadamer — horizons of understanding I want to begin by approaching conversation as a way of coming to an understanding sometimes called a dialogic structure of understanding.

In addition Family Services group facilitators will incorporate the Discovery Dating curriculum, a promising practice that builds on Native American values, and the Stand Up and Speak Out program, an evidenced informed curriculum, to address and prevent youth violence and bullying.

January 30, , University of Leicester Scientists from universities of Leicester and Cambridge find an ‘unfossilizable’ creature. To their surprise, the samples yielded miniscule loriciferans: Moreover, the fossils date to the late Cambrian Period, meaning they lived around half a billion years ago. This suggests that soon after the origin of animals, some groups were adopting specialized “meiobenthic” lifestyles, living among grains of sediment on the seabed.

Then began the delicate task of cleaning the fossil and securing it on a microscope slide. They are easy to overlook: University of Leicester Dr Harvey added:
